Creating the Blacksmith Character - Part 2

Image
After completing the initial face sketches I did, I moved on to some full scale ideas for what the character might look like. I did three designs exploring different hairstyles, outfits and facial features. I have included an image of these sketches below as well as a 30 second timelapse of the process. I then had a look at each design and circled things I liked in green, and things I didn’t like in red. Anything I didn’t circle in green or red I felt indifferent about. This process helps me to narrow down what elements I want in the final design, the elements I would consider and the elements I definitely didn’t think worked. Below is an image of the areas I liked and didn’t like. Sometimes I also make notes here to refer back to. Once this was done I could move on to combining these elements in a final design. I have included below a picture of this completed design and a timelapse a minute and a half long showing the process of making it. I placed the character on a very light backg...

Digital Sketchbook Update - Part 1

Image
Similar to my update on my sketchbook outside of University work, I wanted to do a digital sketchbook summary of any bits I have done, especially as I have been unwell, these odd bits of sketching have definitely helped me get back into painting again. I will include images and the 30 second timelapse’s for each, then I have everything in one place! Having a mental disorder is tricky, because while I love art and creating, when a spell hits of feeling particularly unwell, I stop doing everything I enjoy. So I am happy that I have been able to have these moments of sketching and experimenting - hopefully I will be able to do another blog post with more of these sketches in future! A duck! I wanted to experiment with a more sketchy style, like it was drawn on paper with pencils and crayons. I think I did this one with the hopes of making it a sticker. I was inspired by artist “a.does.art.22”, their art is really fun to look at and very sketchy and colourful. I have included a link here:...

Essay Completed

Over the next few blog posts I will be posting updates on work I have done over the past month, as I have had a difficult time with my mental health I did have a few weeks of not being able to work on my modules, though over the past two weeks I have started getting back into working again.  That being said, this post I will go over my essay progress - the short summary is: it’s done! But I will give more of a breakdown here showing some of the pages in the essay. I am still awaiting feedback so changes may still be made after this point.  Word Count My word count from start of the Introduction to the end of my Research Reflection comes to 2671 words. As the essay requirements are for 2500 words with a 10% allowance over or under, this means my essay fits the criteria. The total words of the whole essay, inclusive of also the Contents, Bibliography and Appendix comes to 2936 words, though this isn’t what is used for the word count requirement for the essay - just thought it wa...

Essay Progress

Image
Today I wanted to get a bit of a plan for what I would do with my essay, so I started out by gathering all the Q&A portions of my emails and messages to industry professionals, and I put them all onto my Notion for easier reference and access. Below is a screenshot of these notes are laid out: Now these are easier to access, I put the quotes and questions into my essay to get an overall look at word count and what I am working with, the guide word count we should aim for this section of the essay is 1000 words. I definitely have a lot to work with! So now it will be a case of reworking the quotes I have and inputting my own thoughts! I started to rework the quotes, including smaller snippets to allow me to add my thoughts, I will include screenshots below of progress so far: The word count is definitely looking a lot healthier now! Though it will likely need reworking further after inputting the third industry artists quotes. I also need to add in more of my own thoughts and some g...

Talking to Artists in Industry - Part 4

Image
Continuing with my industry discussions, I got a response from Senior 3D Artist at Blizzard, Ben Erdt. I wanted to ask him his perspective on what concept art should include to be effective for a 3D artist. Below is screenshots of the conversation we have had.  It was really interesting to get a 3D artists insight, and I think a lot of his advice will be really helpful in my concept work.

Creating the Blacksmith Character - Part 1

Image
After finalising the brief today and doing research on Pinterest I got started with some face sketches for the blacksmith character, I wanted to explore hairstyles and facial hair. I also wanted to see what facial features could be altered to give an unapproachable/intimidating sort of look. Next I will be explore the characters body and outfit, but below is an image and time-lapse of the face ideas.

Setting My Next Brief

Image
After reflecting on areas to improve I have set myself the next brief as a base guide to creating the next character. I have included images of the brief below, I have also pinned any research relating to this character on to the same Pinterest board for this module, the link is here;  https://pin.it/4PkgqLw9l
