Contacting Industry Artists for the Essay

As our next essay will require us to speak with industry professionals I wanted to get ahead of contacting people before getting started on the essay itself. So I did some research on artists I would like to speak with, while we only require two or three discussions with different professionals for the essay I decided to contact a larger number as I assume some will be too busy to get back in touch - the worst case scenario is that I get too many responses, but even if they are not included in the essay it will help in my personal practice having the advice. 

Below is a screenshot of the people I have contacted today, I have done this primarily via Instagram and email. I am tracking this information in Notion to make it easier to see when I contacted each artist as well as how I contacted them. 


I also listed out some initial questions to ask the artists, though I will add to this more questions and likely personalise them a bit more to each artist as they respond.

Choosing a Theme for My Concepts

After looking through ArtStation at what other concept artists are doing in their prop designs, I wanted to try to settle on a theme for my own set of props. Creating a Show Reel + Final Degree Show Preparations

With the degree show approaching, this blog post will cover final preparations and will also include my show reel.  Below is the show reel I have created to display my work. I ordered my final prints for my physical portfolio, while my paintings are made to display best digitally, I still wanted an option available for people should they prefer physical portfolios. I added in some basic title pages to separate each section, below is some images to give an idea of what the physical portfolio looks like. Ultimately it is just all the work in my online portfolio organised into a physical one. I also updated and tidied up my online portfolio both on my website and on ArtStation. I have included some screen captures below to show the additions of the recent projects. I now feel ready for the upcoming degree show, I will continue to do what I can to promote the event and my work in hopes people might come and take a look at it!

Observation Studies - Understanding Shape and Colour

I wanted to get a bit more of an understanding of the differences between 40's/50's props and furniture and futuristic designs - this will help me in creating designs that blend the two themes together well. So using Pinterest I started by doing some observation sketches of furniture I saw from the 40's/50's as well as the colours used in these pieces. 50's/40's furniture observation sketches Timelapse of the process After finishing my sketches, I created a new layer and just drew out some of the basic shapes in the pieces of furniture, overall, there seems to be lots of squares and sharp edges/angles, as well as lots of circles especially on smaller details.  Outline of the basic shapes Next, I used Adobe Color to extract some themes from my sketches, what colours appear most consistently, while it's only a small selection it can still help give me an idea of what colour schemes and moods are most common in 40's/50's furniture.
