Creating Witch Characters - Part 1

Image
For the next series of paintings, I want to use what I have learnt so far on making a piece interesting (especially in relation to use of colour) and apply this to some character concepts.  I want to create a series of concepts for witches, so my first step was to gather some images to help me to brainstorm ideas. I did the majority of this using Pinterest, looking into other witch characters and how they were done, I also looked at more experimental and surreal characters. I have included a link to the Pinterest board here:  https://pin.it/13hrXHn After gathering some ideas, I created a collage with my favourite images: This gives me a good snapshot view of concepts I found interesting, having this ‘at a glance’ view will help me through the design process. Of course for a closer look at each piece I can look at the full images individually. I definitely seem to gravitate to the darker and more surreal concepts, so I think I want my designs to be similar in this overall feel.

Getting Back Into Painting - Part 2

Image
Continuing on from my last post, I spent a few hours today experimenting on Procreate to play around with brushes, layer types and just generally get back into painting again.  I definitely wasn’t as loose as I would have liked, but I tried a lot of different things and I am happy with the outcome. I started by looking at a reference image for inspiration and began sketching from there, I think overall this piece took me about an hour and a half. I also was able to get a timelapse of my process, I have included screenshots and the timelapse. 2 and a half minute timelapse showing the process of creating the piece. The outline for this piece I wanted to keep quite loose, I knew my end result I wanted to look quite abstract, so I didn’t want to spend too long on the outline stage as I wouldn’t get a lot of use from it. I stuck to using two hues next to each other on the colour wheel to paint this, and unlike in my previous piece, I just painted with colour rather than grayscale then gradi

Getting Back Into Painting - Part 1

Over the Christmas break I have been having a difficult time with my mental health, combined with how busy this time of year can be meant time away from painting. In this blog post I will go over getting back into painting and brainstorming for finishing my project for uni. One of the things I did to get back into painting was to paint a gift for someone’s birthday in January, because it was for someone else it made it feel fun to paint as I am excited to give it to them. It is a painting of a walrus playing the trumpet, based on a video online they love, I have included process screenshots and the final painting below. I created an initial rough sketch. Next I blocked out each area in different block colours for easier selection. I then used black and white shading to prepare the piece for gradient maps. Then after completing the grayscale I added the gradient maps to give colour. Then I added some extra elements of shading and highlights, I added the whiskers and brought some more pi

Colour Scheme Studies - Part 3

Image
I finalised my studies of colour schemes, below as with previous posts are screenshots of the paintings done and an explanation of the colour scheme used in each. Within this study I used a rectangular tetrad, similar to a square tetrad it allows me to use four colours across the colour wheel, except at points forming a rectangular shape. I tried to keep this study to about half an hour to make sure I wasn’t getting too carried away. This colour scheme is polychromatic, meaning six or more colours at even spaces across the colour wheel are used. I can definitely see this being a really useful type of colour scheme for busier pieces. Finishing off my studies I used a split double complementary colour scheme, this colour scheme is a hybrid of split and double complementary and consists of five colours. It was useful to help achieve different hues on the oranges but still giving enough options for the leaves and the background. I didn’t detail the leaves once again to save some time. Belo

Colour Scheme Studies - Part 2

As in the previous post, I continued with my experiments with colour schemes, I have included the studies below and have explained which colour scheme has been used for each. This study used a square tetrad which I felt worked for this piece as it seems to represent the sky and flowers. This piece uses double complementary as the scheme, which I think is very dramatic, as it’s double complementary it feels more usable than just complementary. This colour scheme is a diad, two colours close to one another but not directly next to each other.

Colour Scheme Studies - Part 1

I want to take a closer look at colour harmonies, so I decided to look online for images that fall use colours falling under particular harmonies or that are similar to them. Then I created quick painting studies of each of these. Below are screenshots showing the source images, paintings and hues used within each piece. This study I looked at using a complementary colour harmony, the blue and red hues shown. I think this was really interesting to use and my eyes definitely feel drawn to the lanterns, being the warmer hue. This piece I used split complementary, it definitely allows for a lot of contrast as with complementary, but the third hue definitely gave me more options. For this piece I remained within one hue, making this piece monochromatic. It is very intense, I think partly because of the red but also being that it is the only colour in the piece. For this piece I tried out an analogous colour scheme, it definitely makes the piece feel quite calming and cohesive. It is easy t
