Continuing to Develop Concepts

Image
I have spent the past few days getting back to concept work, I decided to change my workflow slightly as previously I would model a prop, then outline, colour, detail and complete. I would do this for each prop concept, completing the entire process for one prop before working on the next.  The problem with the workflow is as I am not as familiar with 3D modelling as I am painting, I would find it difficult to get used to using Blender each time, so I instead set out to model a selection of the props first before taking them into the rest of the process. I felt this worked much better, and was able to get 4 props modelled in a day, ready to move on to the next steps. Below are some screenshots of the models that I created and then would take into Procreate to finalise my concepts. The props I chose to create concepts of being a bin, coffee machine, lighting fixture and toaster. I then worked on creating outlines over the models on Procreate. Now I had some clean line-work, I could ...

Preparing for the Degree Show + Looking for Jobs in Industry

Image
The past week or two I have focused on getting preparations done for both the degree show, and generally preparing for looking for work in industry. While this isn't directly related to my physical practice, I felt it was still important to update everything I have been working on here. One of my first tasks was to update my portfolio on both ArtStation and on my website, below are screenshots of the new website and the updated ArtStation. Here is a link to both of these sites for a full view: ArtStation -   https://www.artstation.com/cosynoodle Website -  https://cosynoodleart.wixsite.com/portfolio Next, I designed some business cards and ordered those in preparation, as well as a display/holder for them. Next I ordered printouts of all of my work for my online portfolio so I could have a physical version for people to flick through if preferred. I also ordered a display case/carrier to display these in (I haven't put the printouts in just yet). Below is example of one o...

Developing Some of the Final Concepts

Image
After the exploration of multiple concepts I went over in my previous posts, it was time for me to start to create finalised concepts for these props - my goal is to do as many of these as I can to improve my workflow and understanding of creating prop concepts.  Many artists in industry concepting props start out with using a 3D modelling software to create something to work from. Essentially, rather than sketching two views of a prop from scratch, it is quicker to create a 3D model so sketch over after creating it - by no means does it need to be 'game ready' as a 3D artist would do this, but it just speeds up the sketching process.  So I went into Blender and made my first prop, I have included screenshots of this below. I started out by making a clock.  Once I was happy with where everything was placed and the shapes of everything, I took these screenshots into Procreate to begin working on the final concept. Again. I have included images below, as well as a 30 second...

Further Concept Exploration

Image
Continuing on from my previous update, I finished off my concept sheet I was working on. I added in a coffee machine and a sofa, to give the sofa a futuristic feel I gave it a lot of curved edges, but used a fabric trim to give a 50’s feel. For the coffee machine, I tried to keep the shape reminiscent of 50’s coffee machines but with a screen to select coffee type, and an automatic glass door that slides down when a selection is chosen. Below is the sketches and a time-lapse.   Following on from these initial sketches, I worked on some thumbnail sketches, allowing me to explore multiple options by first laying out some shapes and working within them. A lot of artists use this process to generate ideas they might not have done if they weren't working within the constraints of the shape drawn. Below is a picture of two sheets of concepts I worked through, along with time-lapses of each. I tried to continue with designs even if I didn't like them as they may have elements that I u...

Initial Concept Exploration

Image
I started to explore some initial concepts, trying to blend both a futuristic and 50's feel. I imagined humanity living in space on another planet, each city contained in oxygenated domes that also are able to alter the gravity within the space. I started with a sofa with restraints, this would allow people to relax outside the domes. I thought about how it would be promoted to people, and how product focused the 50's was. I then made a drinks dispenser, the selling point of the drinks is that they provide all the nutritional needs of customers (though would probably also have some not nice ingredients that are in the fine print). Next I created a light which is similar to an LED light bar, surrounded by a decorative element similar to lampshade shapes in the 50's. Finishing up this page I made a radio, this radio also has the functionality to show a screen if the station features video, it also is able to display subtitles live as the speakers or music plays. While it has ...

Observation Studies - Understanding Shape and Colour

Image
I wanted to get a bit more of an understanding of the differences between 40's/50's props and furniture and futuristic designs - this will help me in creating designs that blend the two themes together well. So using Pinterest I started by doing some observation sketches of furniture I saw from the 40's/50's as well as the colours used in these pieces. 50's/40's furniture observation sketches Timelapse of the process After finishing my sketches, I created a new layer and just drew out some of the basic shapes in the pieces of furniture, overall, there seems to be lots of squares and sharp edges/angles, as well as lots of circles especially on smaller details.  Outline of the basic shapes Next, I used Adobe Color to extract some themes from my sketches, what colours appear most consistently, while it's only a small selection it can still help give me an idea of what colour schemes and moods are most common in 40's/50's furniture. I have included the s...
